DRS work with MCA on Severn Sands Vessel

DRS Demolition National Limited has successfully salvaged the Severn Sands vessel from the Torridge Estuary.

After successfully towing the vessel from its un authorised location upstream to Yellands Quay the vessel was beached adjacent to the jetty and secured.

Due to the nature of its cargo and high levels of asbestos present within the engine room and lubricants present careful and compliant removal was nesacarry to prepare the vessel to be cut up for disposal.

Vessel removal was undertaken by a 360 high reach excavator with shear and grab attachments reducing the vessel systematically and progressively to beach level.

The whole project was closely monitored by the Environmental Agency, Natural England, MCA and County / Local Council’s ensuring all work undertaken complied with the highest environmental and safety standards.

The operation involved constant monitoring of beach areas and the water quality within the estuary.

This operation generated much interest from local residents and users of the adjacent Tarka Trail who regularly monitored the vessel removal and were pleased to see a long term hazard removed from the area.

DRS Demolition National Limited were pleased to be able to assist with this operation and bring it to a successful conclusion.

Top Gear - The Motorhome one.

Back in May this year, the BBC show’s Top Gear decided it would be a good idea to drive an improvised motorhome off a 150ft cliff. Why? Why not!

Watched by millions, we saw Jeremy Clarkson sitting on the beach eating an ice cream whilst in the background his Motorhome was trickled off the cliff above Harland Quay.

All environmental precautions were in place, oil, battery and various fluids were all removed before the drop happened. Guided by DRS, the vehicle was positioned to allow recoverable salvage from the beach area.

Once on the beach, DRS responded quickly due to the incoming tides, successfully recovering the vehicle to the quayside using a 360 excavator. It was then later transported back, by DRS, to the BBC Top Gear studio to show the audience the vehicle in its surprisingly good condition considering its fate.

We would like to thank the BBC for giving us this opportunity to work with them on a fantastic show.

DRS complete A30 Tolvaddon Bridge Deck Demolition

DRS have successfully completed the demolition/dismantling of the A30 Tolvaddon bridge, Camborne.

The works were carried out in 2 phases, both phases being completed ahead of programme.

Following detailed design and planning the road surfacing was removed to expose the concrete deck. The deck was cut longitudinally by Rock Saw into 2.0m segments, seven segments in phase 1 and 8 segments in phase 2. The abutment walls were exposed and removed to below the underside of deck. Surfacing, approach slabs and fill material were removed for Dean & Dyball from both sides of the bridge deck prior to the next phase of work.

Phase 1 Westbound - Each segment was lifted down on to the A3047 carriageway below the deck. Special protection measures were put in place to ensure the carriageway was not damaged. These were broken in half then loaded onto transportation and taken to the DRS facility for recycling.

Phase 2 Eastbound - The deck segments were lifted onto the newly constructed Wetsbound deck. Special protection measures were put in place to ensure the new deck was not damaged. Each segment was cut in half using a wire saw then loaded onto transportation and taken to the DRS facility for recycling.

Two cranes were used to tandem lift each segment, the heaviest segment being 107 tonnes.

DRS employed the specialist services of Benaim (UK) to provide a detailed demolition design.
